“I believe to fully understand and teach the game at its highest level you must have played at its highest level.
The reaching of the Major League plateau necessitates the spending of a mind-numbing amount of hours analyzing, breaking down and attempting to perfect all aspects of the players craft through a staggering amount of repetitions. The player attempts to ingrain the perfect muscle memory so to ensure he's able to perform every complex move the game calls on him to deliver without flaw under the pressure of the Major League stage.
The physical reps, day after day, month after month, season after season were not mindless ones; there was an ongoing self-analysis that took place from one rep to another. Constantly he analyzed, tweaked and adjusted as he strove for perfection from one rep to the next... He was LEARNING, he HAS learned. The process garnered him a knowledge base and "feel" for the game so far beyond the individual who does not possess the same experience that he's not even aware of the depth of what he doesn't know.
There are only 800 in a world of 7+ billion persons at any given moment that can call themselves Major Leaguers. They had to have done something extraordinary to separate themselves from so many. Therein lies the essence of what you as an amateur must seek out to give your son a chance to maximize his potential, a chance to reach the next level and then the next.
From an instructional standpoint, I spend countless hours unwinding bad mechanics that have been ingrain in players by well meaning but unqualified instructors. If you’re seeking the best possible instruction available for your son especially in his formative years choose your resources carefully. Be it baseball or any other sport choose an instructor who has played at the highest level and is a good communicator.”
